The Dating Playbook is the second book in The Boyfriend Project series. It can be read as a standalone but I think The Boyfriend Project is important to understand the relationship between Taylor, Samiah and London.
Their friendship is an important part of the book. The Dating Playbook is a must read for fans of The Boyfriend Project. I can't wait to read London's story. I listened to the audiobook narrated by Rebecca Lee and thought she did a great job bringing this story to life.

Jamar Dixon is looking to get back into the NFL after an injury took him out of the game and he's convinced that Taylor's brand of drill sergeant training will do the trick. But there's more heating up than the workouts she puts him through.
I'll be up front, sports romance isn't really my thing and I also don't love all the focus on food not eating carbs, swapping foods etc. and exercis 3. and exercise for weight loss. It makes sense for the characters, just not something I prefer to read and heads up to others who might feel similarly. And the characters do some kind of dumb things because they don't want to face their fears.
That said, I think there's a lot to like here. The development of their relationship is great and they try to be careful about blurring lines when she's employed by him.
I also loved the way this dealt with learning disabilities in adults that have gone undiagnosed, and the attention on traumatic brain injury among football players. Overall a solid romance, even if it wasn't quite my preferred trope combo. The narrator does a good job with the audiobook and it's easy to listen to. I received an audio review copy via NetGalley. This is the second book in Rochon's adult romance series, following The Boyfriend Project , which I also generally liked but had some issues with mainly that I liked the friendship and job aspects way more than the romance itself.
Here I liked the romance more, but the good tension Rochon built up at the beginning was punctured way too soon for me. I also thought it ended up being a bit scattered thematically at the end. One of the things that drew me to the book at the beginning was the all too real way Rochon was writing about Taylor and her financial struggles. I've had those lean years where you don't know where the money will be coming from next, and you have to decide what to pawn, and which bills not to pay.
But that aspect entirely fell away, sort of replaced by Taylor's struggle to accept she had a learning disorder, and to fit in with her family. Anyway, this is ostensibly a book about a fake relationship, but I don't think it took advantage of that trope at all, and maybe would have been better off without it.
It felt forced at the beginning why they were even doing it and introduced yet another narrative problem for Taylor, in her fear of trusting Jamar because of what a past client had done to her after she slept with him.
And the actual fake relationship lasts for all of ten minutes, and is not a source of tension or conflict in the book. They enter into a sexual relationship soon after the fake dating starts, and then five minutes after that they decide they're doing this for real, so what was the point. With all of that shoved in there, the genuinely affecting scenes where Jamar had to deal with the lingering guilt over the death of his best friend Silas years before didn't hit as hard as they could have otherwise.

The Dating Playbook was filled with all the banter and amazing female friendships that I love so much. The squad of Taylor, London, and Samiah truly is the best!
I loved how they pushed each other to be their best selves and were always there to lend a hand. The overall pacing of the book was on the slower side for me, but I really liked how with a little help from friends and loved ones Jamar and Taylor both made peace with their pasts and moved forward towards brighter futures. Read The Dating Playbook if you love: - Fake dating trope - Supportive and amazing female friendships. Friends that are there for you through all the highs and lows and cheer you on every step of the way.

I loved this book! What a terrific read. I enjoyed THE DATING PLAYBOOK immensely! The characters are genuine, relatable, and had amazing chemistry and banter throughout. This is a definite win! Here's what I loved: This author is a master at writing characters who are real and relatable. I can see myself in certain aspects of their story.
That's a huge draw for me! Taylor is dealing with a few complex situations, not unlike a lot young women. Her tenacity and work ethic are inspiring. Jamar is perfection personified. He's 4. He's hard working, sweet, and sexy. I fell hard for him. The friendship the three ladies developed in book one of this series has only grown stronger. To see how supportive and loving they are with one another is so amazing. Fake relationships are my jam. This is one of the best!
Overall, this book has it all. I felt all the feels, laughed out loud, and fell in love. What more could you want?! I thought the writing flowed well, and I read it fairly quickly. However, it didn't click as well for me as the first one. Despite it not clicking to the same level, I did enjoy this story, and I look forward to the next one. The series premise is a fun one. Three women form a bond after their viral public take-down of the guy they each unwittingly have been seeing. Three very different heroines - a techy nerd, a fitness in After enjoying the first in this series, I was excited to read this book.
Three very different heroines - a techy nerd, a fitness instructor, and a doctor. Taylor is the fitness instructor. She has ambitions to grow her fitness business, but unlike her new girlfriends, she's in a much more tenuous position financially and with her career. A few misguided decisions have her in a deep hole financially. This is where Jamar steps in. He's a former high school and college football star, who had a promising NFL career cut short with what would be a career-ending injury for many half-way through his first season.
He hires Taylor to be his full-time trainer to get him back in shape for the NFL and to prove the naysayers wrong. The attraction is there from the beginning, but they want to keep their relationship professional. Then, when reporters start sniffing around why Jamar is hanging out with a trainer, Taylor blurts out that they are dating. So, they are fake-dating in public, have the desire to date in truth, and are training in private. This could have had such delicious tension, but I didn't feel it.
I think it boiled down to a mismatch between the tension and the action. For example, when they finally succumb to the "why not date in truth when everyone thinks we are anyways" dilemma, it felt anti-climactic. It was after the tension had eased some and it needed to be built back up again, at least that's my take. I liked the characters overall.
I thought there stories compelling. I did think some of the issues felt surface-deep, but I think that would have been a minor complaint if the tension had worked better. I do think this was a good pairing, so the romance worked on some levels, just not all. Ultimately, while this didn't fully work for me, I did think this was a diverting read. Settings were well-drawn, and I thought all the major components were there. It just didn't click for me like the first book.

I fell in love with Taylor, Samiah and London in The Boyfriend Project, because they came together to celebrate being strong women in the face of a scumbag who dated them all at the same time. And they came up with a game-plan to make their lives better.
I have to admit I love them even more now that I have read Taylor's story with Jamar. Because the women's friendship is still very important, and they continue to lift each other up. The Dating Playbook includes a fake relationship between Taylor and Jamar, because Jamar needs a personal trainer but doesn't want anyone to know about it.
Just in case. Of course, playing a new couple when they are so attracted to each other couldn't do anything else but lead to real feelings. But my goodness, especially Taylor tried to fight those feelings. And she was fierce! Reading about strong women is something I absolutely love. And when they are able to deal with all the different kinds of difficulty life throws their way, I love them even more! Taylor had a lot to deal with, between not earning enough money, to realizing it would be a good idea to go back to school.
Only, she also knew that school hadn't worked so well for her in the past. And I love how she and her friends walked through things, and how Jamar helped her understand that she was definitely strong enough to do what she wanted. Between the hot chemistry, the friendships, and the somewhat difficult relationship Taylor had with her family, I was hooked from start to finish!

I have been in a horrible slump for the past few weeks, and this book pulled me out. This book has all these amazing tropes jam packed into one and I love it ���� It was the light and easy read that needed.
Maybe if I read this at some other time I may not have enjoyed it, who knows? But this book was just what I needed right now. Normally I love angst in my romance novels. I just love feeling that pain you know. But I didn't understand the beauty of low-angst romance until I read this one. It was simple and straight to the point. I loved it. Perfect for when you are in a slump. One thing I will warn you about, don't go in expecting this to be sports heavy.
I kind of came in expecting those cute scenes in sports romances where one character cheers the others from the bleachers or gives a dramatic hug after a game. That does not happen in this book. The sports honestly isn't a huge part of the story as much it is just background on Jamar and his motivations.
The story was wonderfully layered and deep while still have an easy, readability. I loved watching both develop and come to terms with their struggles. You guys know I am a whore for intellectual chemistry. Both being in the fitness industry allowed both of them to wordlessly understand and push each other and I was melting over that ��It was written in a way that I understood what they were talking about without getting lost.
I was feeling that connection between them. I will say I wanted more chemistry and genuine connection from the two overall though. I felt the physcial chemistry, however, I was just not feeling the emotional and romantic chemistry.
I just felt like they were a good fling. I also didn't get that natural progression and realization to love. They were doing their thing and then suddenly they were in love.
I like a more natural and realistic development. Jamar was kind and supportive of Taylor but had the tendency to be dismissive or unhelpful some times. I felt like he was not that helpful when it came to the issues Taylor was facing. He was kind about it and he provided her words of support and understanding every now and then, but in general I felt like he was pretty absent. He was trying to come to terms with his issues on his own timeline, and he is allowed to do that. He had a lot at stake and issues that he was struggling with for years, he couldn't just turn it off like a switch.
I do understand why she was mad, it was out of concern, but I think the way she behaved was not rational. I think calm, communication could have solved their issue. I will note that Taylor, in general, was super supportive of Jamar. I am really, really tired of unnecessary conflicts in the third act and I wasn't a big fan of this one either. Overall, I would definitely recommend this to someone looking for a light, easy read or palette cleanser.
I loved the narrator. They increased my enjoyment ten fold, a huge reason why I ended up enjoying the book so much despite my qualms with the story. Her voice suits the book and the characters wonderfully and she elevated the whole experience.
